Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY): Strip Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) of his Chairman role for the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources
[URGENT] Signatures will be sent to Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY)'s office on 7/22/2022.
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) serves as the Chairman of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. The focus of this committee is on “energy resources and development, including regulation, conservation, strategic petroleum reserves and appliance standards; nuclear energy; Indian affairs; public lands and their renewable resources; surface mining, Federal coal, oil, and gas, other mineral leasing; territories and insular possessions; and water resources.”
Despite their focuses, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) has stated he would not support any further climate action in the Senate, claiming he wishes “to avoid taking steps that add fuel to the inflation fire.”
Meanwhile his worries about money spending, he has and is receiving constant donations from, directly and indirectly, the coal industry. Just in 2021, he had millions in holdings in a coal brokerage business he himself founded called Enersystems, Inc. He then proceeded to make more than $500,000 from these holdings. Between the years 2011 and 2020, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) made around $5 million from coal enterprises. He has also taken money in his campaign from big energy interests, including billionaire oil hogs like Harold Hamm, Richard Kinder, Kinder Morgan, and Trevor Rees-Jones.
His monetary positions, which are heavily aided by big coal and oil companies, go directly against the focus of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, and instead show that he is bought off by big coal and oil industries. As Public Citizen lobbyist Craig Holman puts it, “Manchin is a walking conflict of interest.”
We are calling on Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) to wield his power and help prevent future conflicts of interest and interference from big oil and gas companies by stripping Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) of his role as Chairman in the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
